Overview

The RPI Symphony Orchestra is in the unique position of being a Union-funded club as well as a 1-credit course offered in both the spring and fall semesters. Interested students who have classes that partially overlap the rehearsal times are still encouraged to come by and may be able to join as a club member rather than an official class.

In general, auditions are not required to join the orchestra, however the type and quantity of instruments needed varies from semester to semester, depending on what is called for in the music that is played. In the event that the number of players in a given section exceeds the number of players needed, auditions will be held for those seats.

Wind and brass players that do not get selected (or are not needed) for a given semester are encouraged to join other musical groups at RPI, such as the Symphonic Band or Jazz Band, and may certainly re-audition the following semester.

Although there currently is no official string ensemble - string quartets, trios, and quintets have often been formed impromptu, and RPI offers a 2-credit Chamber Music Ensemble course for this purpose. A limited amount of chamber music is available in the music department library.

Rehearsals are held on Tuesdays from 7:00-9:00 pm in West Hall 326.
